Admissions
Admission to the Graduate Group in Integrative Pathobiology (GGIP) is open for the Fall Quarter each year. It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all application materials are submitted by the appropriate application deadline. Applications received by the December 1st general deadline will be considered for priority evaluation and funding opportunities. Applicants who apply by the space available deadline (March 1) but after the general deadline are not guaranteed to have their application reviewed by the graduate program. Their application will be reviewed only if the graduate program determines it has additional space available.
Applications are completed electronically. The link to the application opens in September of each year and can be found on the Graduate Studies page under "Apply Now."
Prospective graduate students may apply for admission to either the M.S. or Ph.D. programs. GGIP is designed for students interested in studying disease at the global, organismal, cellular, or molecular level.
UC Davis Graduate Studies has final responsibility for admissions. The Admissions Committee makes recommendations for admission on behalf of the graduate group to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

The GGIP Admissions Committee performs a holistic review of all applications received by December 1. Applications received between December 2-March 1 will only be reviewed if space is available.
A holistic, or “whole file” review process in graduate admissions considers every aspect of an applicant’s file equally, without any one factor deciding admission. The holistic review also entails understanding an applicant’s achievements in the context of available opportunities and challenges faced. We encourage applicants to use their Admission Essays as an opportunity to share who they are, where they have come from, any challenges that they may have overcome, and how an advanced degree represents the next step towards achieving their ultimate career goals.
GGIP Equity Program
The UC Davis Graduate Group in Integrative Pathobiology (GGIP) is committed to diversity and inclusion in our student body, workforce, faculty and programs. We recognize the financial burden that the graduate application fee may represent for students, particularly those from underrepresented communities, and its consequences to inclusion within our graduate group.
We have created the GGIP Equity Program, to provide 10 application fee fellowships, on a competitive basis, to applicants who are not part of the approved Graduate Preparatory Programs, and who have the potential for leadership towards achieving the group’s goal of improving diversity in biological or biomedical sciences.
Examples of this potential include, but are not limited to:
- overcoming disadvantages (economic, social or educational)
- a record of service to advance underserved populations (including tutoring or mentoring)
- or a research topic that will ultimately assist historically underserved populations
Successful applicants will provide clear examples of how their previous experiences and future graduate studies have contributed to and promoted diversity in biological or biomedical sciences.
Statement of Purpose (250 words or fewer)
Please explain why you are applying for Ph.D. study at UC Davis. Highlight how you came to determine your career goals. Describe why you feel earning a Ph.D. is essential to pursuing your goal. If applicable, how will your research topic ultimately assist historically underserved populations.
Personal History (250 words or fewer)
Please describe how your personal background has informed your decision to pursue a graduate degree and informed your understanding of diversity in the biological or biomedical sciences. Your background may include any educational, familial, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges, community service, outreach activities, residency and citizenship, first-generation college status, or opportunities relevant to your academic journey; how your life experiences contribute to the social, intellectual, or cultural diversity within a campus community and your chosen field; and/or how you might serve educationally underrepresented and underserved segments of society with your graduate education.
Guidelines prepared for planning and illustrative purposes only.
